Where Have I Been?

April 30, 2008

In case any of you are wondering where I have been the past week or so, I went on a fishing trip to the Outer Banks – Portsmouth Island, to be exact. It was incredible. I didn’t know that beaches like this still existed around here. The Island is 21 miles long and there is really nothing on it – as it is part of a National Park – Cape Lookout National Seashore. There isn’t much on the Island except a few small cabins and a bunch of fisherman. Anyways, check out my catch…a 48 inch red drum with a girth of 32 inches. Due to regulations, any red drum of this size has to be released to make more red drum, so he was released without being able to obtain a weight. According to several length/girth formulas for red drum, the weight was estimated at between 61 pounds and 64 pounds. Definately the largest fish I have ever caught – and he was only about 10 feet from the edge of the surf.
